Exploring Music in Context: Section 3, AOI 1

The most prominent piece of this song is the grief and devastation that is able to be felt by the reader in the beginning melody of the song, whether you have context provided or understand the language or not, Fairuz’s somber voice captures a glimpse into the hearts of every grieving person. I chose to focus on this in my piece because of the viola’s ability to play deeper notes, incorporating it into my adaption by playing with legato throughout the melody, focusing on my bowing technique, specifically by using heavy bow strokes. I also included the vibrato naturally heard in Fairuz’s voice to add to the enriching quality of the song.

When listening to Zahrat el-Madaen I realized that the quick switching of notes was much easier with vocals, and that I would have to include triplets for a viola part to play

The shifts between moods throughout different melodies was able to be differentiated by various indications in my adapted piece. For the shift from the beginning solemn melody to the jovial second section, I accelerated the piece and increased dynamics to signify the difference.

Fairuz’s voice slid up three notes at (timestamp), to reflect this on the viola I decided to add a glissando between those three notes

The use of the viola instead of an instrument such as the piano, flute, or even violin was to imitate the quality of Fairuz’s voices to the best of my ability, the ability to slide between notes, add vibrato, and convey the beautiful and haunting melody of the song on an instrument that is allowed to go delve into the lower registry was extremely important to my adaptation.
