harmony: in C major. Am, G, C. Harmony present in baseline, continuing through entire piece.
texture: homophonic textures supporting spoken word poetry. vocals singing blocked triads, violin playing arpeggios.
meter: starts off in simple meter and then moves to compound. uses various time signatures and phrase lengths to create interest against a very simple harmonic progression
form: each section adds new elements, the piece starts with one layer and then more are added throughout the section to generate interest
style: minimalism. simply hypnotic music which uses diatonic repetitive harmony and complex time signatures and polyrhythms
context: written for an opera entitled 'Einstein on the beach' which premiered in 1976
expression: lack of expressive elements in order to focus audience attention on harmonic aspects create a meditative ambience.
